Requirements of First Time Right
In semiconductor manufacturing, First Time Right is a structural necessity, not just an aspiration. Due to the precision, complexity, and unit cost involved, there is virtually no room for error. Defects that are not addressed at their origin propagate through tightly coupled process steps, reducing yield and increasing cycle time at each stage.
The financial implications are significant
A single mask re-spin can cost between $500,000 and $10 million. A yield ramp delay of four to eight weeks, in terms of capacity cost, can result in $1 million to $20 million in lost revenue. A delay in customer launch can incur costs ranging from $5 million to $50 million. A field failure, both direct and indirect, can reach costs of $10 million to $100 million or more.
Manufacturing excellence is founded on two key elements: process rigor and speed of response
Rigor involves standardization, strict parameter control, and disciplined problem-solving based on data rather than intuition.
Speed requires shifting control upstream, from end-of-line inspection to real-time, in-process detection, and from reactive problem-solving to proactive intervention.
Digitalization facilitates this transformation
Integrating data across tools and process steps provides engineers with the contextual visibility needed to act before minor issues escalate. Advanced analytics and AI enhance traditional SPC by identifying subtle cross-process interactions that univariate methods may overlook. However, the value lies not in the volume of data, but in timely, actionable insights embedded into daily operations.
The Human Dimension
AI and automation are transforming the role of the engineer, but not diminishing their importance.
Routine monitoring and repetitive interventions should be automated. However, judgment—understanding process behavior, managing trade-offs, validating model outputs, and maintaining system coherence—cannot be automated.
This shift necessitates enhanced skills in data interpretation and systems thinking. Companies that invest in these capabilities now will operate at a significantly higher level within five years.

Implications for European SMEs
The European Chips Act presents a strategic opportunity. However, investment in capacity without a corresponding investment in operational discipline will not yield the necessary returns for the industry.
First Time Right is the most impactful variable available to an SME operating under capital constraints. It leads to less rework, shorter cycle times, higher yield from existing tools, and faster learning across programs.
The constraint is rarely technological access; rather, it is disciplined execution and clear prioritization.
The companies that will shape European semiconductor competitiveness are those that systematically embed parametric learning into every program, rather than doing so anecdotally.
Prevention is always more cost-effective than correction. The economics are clear. The only question is whether action is taken before or after the loss.
